The 10 Months Volunteer Abroad Program focus on working together and teach you to understand situations and find solutions to support the social environment in the best way. In Richmond Vale Academy we are preparing for our 6 months project work in Africa.

An important part of the program is the one-week community work, which helps us improve our skills in organizing independently and implementing plans. Half of our team: Makayla, Mikki, Ari and Enya, visited the St. Benedict Day Nursery and Children’s Home in Georgetown. We gained many new experiences and impressions.

All of us were very excited about the days with the children and living on the different side of the island.

After a 5 hour road trip we met the children and we knew immediately that we were going to have a lot of fun with them.

The tasks were very varied and we were able to consciously focus on the children. Some of the task we did were deep cleaning the children’s rooms as well as weeding and trimming the garden of the Orphanage.

We helped with serving snacks and dinner and supported the children with their homework, played a lot of games and made posters for a young women, who celebrated her birthday.

Over time, we gathered many new insights and inspirations for our stay in Africa. Skills such as patience, spontaneity, ease, organization and initiative were strengthened and we continued to grow together as a team.

During the week we were very independent and were able to plan our day ourselves. We had a clear plan, so we were able to achieve good results and take pride in the work we did.

We personally found this one week of community work very important for the program. It gave us an insight into the next 6 months and our joy for the project that awaits us is getting even bigger.
