Lunar effects on humans and agriculture

The moon and its effects on all living creatures has been the subject of many speculations and myths throughout the ages, from werewolves to lunar agriculture, The moon has been an undeniable force in our world.

In science, some research and experiments have been performed to have a clearer understanding of the effects of the moon and its cycles, however, there has been no conclusive research to prove (or disprove) these effects on the physical and metaphysical levels. Nevertheless, the practice of lunar agriculture has been practiced for thousands of years, and can be traced back to the ancient people of the Nile and Euphrates River valleys in the middle east.

The effects of the moon on the Earth are clear and can be clearly seen with the effects of the moon’s gravitational pull on the oceans, thus creating tides, and as the human body is made of 75% water, it would be safe to predict that the moon could have some effects on our bodies. It is also worth mentioning that the word lunatic is derived from the word Luna, which means moon. Some of these effects could include increased number of childbirths around the period of full moon, regulation of menstrual cycle, inconsistent sleeping patterns and increased epileptic and migraine episodes. These effects can be referred to as tangible effects. As for intangible effects which are mainly studied in spiritual science, these are the effects that happen to our minds rather than our bodies. It’s argued that our mind is divided into two parts, conscious and subconscious minds, the subconscious mind comprises of a number of impressions that are collected with life experiences and genetic formation, and are believed to decide our basic nature, personality and the our choices in life. The impressions in our subconscious mind are usually unnoticed and possess a certain frequency which is more subtle than the frequencies of the moon, so as the moon changes phases, the level of illumination changes and along with it, the frequencies emitted change as well. The more illumination from the moon(full moon) the more a heightened activity of the subconscious mind is observed, as the above mentioned mind impressions surface their way to the conscious mind. If there are a number of dominant personality defects such as anger, greed, etc. then they too may surface and dominate our thoughts during this period. It is also possible to awaken thoughts about Spirituality that lie inert in the sub-conscious mind of a spiritual person by taking advantage of the heightened mind activity and by increasing spiritual practice on a full moon day.

As for Lunar effects on agriculture, and according to agriculture lectures by Dr. Rudolf Steiner,  the Element most affected by the moon is water, and in the 48 hours leading to the full moon, the moisture content of the Earth increases, and the growth of plants seems to be enhanced. This factor provides favourable conditions for the growth of fungus on all plants. Also, the germination of seeds appears to be quicker around the full moon period, as well as fast plant growth and quick re-growth of cut or pruned plants.

Agriculture activities in lunar agriculture are attributed to the different phases of the moon, and can be simply divided into two main phases, the waxing phases(phases leading to the full moon) and waning phases(phases leading to the new moon), and there are different garden chores that can be associated with each of these phases. For example, in the waxing phase, the increased brightness of the moon seems to encourage plant growth and germination, therefore it is advised to plant above ground plants(plants that bear above ground fruits), fertilize and graft fruits trees . Conversely, in the waning phases, the moon decreases in brightness, and therefore it is advised to plant crops that grow below the ground such as carrots and potatoes, cultivate weeds, eliminate slugs and prune shrubs.

Lunar Agriculture is becoming more and more prevalent, some might attribute its success to confirmation bias and to becoming more attentive in farming, however many believe that the moon truly possesses an effect on agriculture (among other things). Farmer’s Almanac is an annual North American publication which was founded in 1818 and is famous for its long range weather predictions  and astronomical data. They are big believers in the effects of the moon on agriculture, and have a detailed calendar of day by day lunar phases and tips on different farming activities and tips according the current phase of the moon.

Confirmation bias, myth or reality, the moon can be a very powerful force, affecting all life around us and within us, and it is through research, practice and the act of being truly aware and mindful that we can recognize the extent(or lack) of these effects.
